Children watching elephants from the roof hatch of a safari vehicle

The problem it solves

Three generations have three body clocks. A camp has one.

This is the class of problem that exclusive use solves and that spending more on individual rooms does not touch.

Three generations

Grandparents wake at six and would like breakfast. Parents want the early drive. Teenagers want to be asleep until eleven and then to do something active.

In a camp these are three competing demands on one kitchen and one vehicle schedule, and somebody loses every day. In a house they are simply three arrangements, and the chef and the guide take them as read.

It is the single commonest reason parties of eight or more end up in a house, and the reason they book the same thing again.

Small children

Meals when children are hungry rather than when a dining room opens. A vehicle that can turn round at eleven without ending anybody else’s afternoon. A pool nobody minds being splashed in. A chef who will cook what a six-year-old eats, which is a quietly enormous advantage.

And usually no minimum age, because there are no other guests to consider — which opens camps and areas that would otherwise be closed to the family entirely.

Mixed interests

One photographer out at five; one person who would like a long breakfast and a book. Two schedules, one household, and no negotiation between them.

The alternative — a compromise itinerary — makes both people slightly unhappy every day for twelve days, which is a poor outcome at any price.

A milestone

A significant birthday, an anniversary, a small wedding, a family gathering that has been three years in the arranging. The wildlife is genuinely not the point of these, and it is worth being honest about that when planning them.

For these, a whole-camp buyout is often better than a house: you get the mess tent, the proper kitchen, several vehicles and a full guiding team, which is what twenty people actually need.

Dietary and medical requirements

A dedicated chef handles these as a matter of course rather than as an accommodation, and the difference in how it feels is larger than it sounds.

The same applies to mobility: a house with its own vehicles and its own pace can absorb a bad knee or a slow morning in a way a camp schedule cannot.

Who it does not suit

Parties of two or four, on cost. And people who like other guests — the conversation at dinner, the couple who saw something you missed, the guide’s briefing to a table of eight.

A party of four that enjoys company can be genuinely lonely in a house built for twelve. It is worth asking yourselves honestly whether the dining room is something you want to escape or something you were quietly looking forward to.
